Part One. Dialogue 1.

AHi Jack. Did you have a good holiday?
B. Yes, I did. Thanks Adam. France is a lovely country and the weather was fantastic.
A. What was the hotel like?
B. It was good. It was very clean and comfortable, but it was further from the town centre than we expected.
A. It's the food OK, Jack?
B. Yes, I thought so. However, my wife doesn't eat meat and there wasn't much choice for vegetarians, so she wasn't very happy with the food.
A. That's a shame. There must have been some good restaurants nearby, though.
B. Yes, Adam, we did find a couple of really good restaurants which served some vegetarian food. So my wife was happy about that, but we were about 5 kilometres from the town so we couldn't go there every evening because the taxis were quite expensive.
A. Food is important when you're on holiday, isn't it? Did you manage to do any sightseeing?

Now listen again.

Dialogue 2

AGood morning. The flower shop. How can I help you?
B. Oh, hello. I'd like to order some flowers, please.
A. Certainly. Is it for a special occasion?

B. Well, it's my sister's birthday today and I forgot to send her a card or buy her a present. She lives in London, which is a long way from here. Could the flowers still be delivered today?
A. Yes, if you o
rder them before one o'clock. It's 10 o'clock now, so that's OK. What would you like to send?
B. My s
ister loves white lilies.
A. I'm sorry we don't have any lilies today. We have some lovely pink roses though. Or we could send a mixture of different flowers.
B. I always think men should send roses. I think I'd like to send something a little different. I think a plant would be nice.
A. We have some very nice plants to choose from.

Dialogue 3

A. Hello may I help you?
B. Yes, my name is Andre. I'd like to do an English course, please.
A. How good is your English?
B. I think I'm intermediate level. I've been learning English for two years.
A. Ok. When would you like to come to college? We have a few places available on the Monday evening class at 6:00 PM.
B. I work on Monday evenings. When are the times of the other classes?
A. There is one on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 o'clock.
B. I'm free then, but I usually go to the gym. Is there a class on Tuesday evening around 6:00 PM?
A. Yes, but there aren't any places left in that class. Could you come on Wednesday evening?
B. No, I can't. I'll have to cancel the gym and come to the other Tuesday class instead.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 4

A. Hi, Angela. I'm really upset about something. I don't know what to do.
B. Oh dear, what's wrong Mary?
A. I told Julie something very private last week and I asked her not to tell anyone. Do you know what she's done? She's told her sister and all our friends from the Tennis Club.
B. Oh. No. I thought Julie was a good friend of yours.
A. I thought so too, but I don't
any more. I'm so upset that I'm never going to speak to her again.
B. I can see you're angry, Mary. But maybe you should ask her why she told them.
A. If I talk to her, I'll just get angry and start shouting at her. I know.  I'll shout at her in front of her friends to embarrass her.
B. It's not a good idea to talk to her directly. Why don't you talk to her sister first?
A. Yes. You're right. Thanks for the advice, Angela.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 5

A. Hi, Natasha, how was work today?
B. You know I hate my job, Andrew. I've bought a newspaper so I can look for a new job this evening.
A. What kind of j
ob do you want?
B. Well, I don't want to work in a shop anymore. I find it so tiring. I want a job where I can sit down some of the time.
A. You could work in an office like me.
B. Oh, no, I'd be so bored if I worked in an office all day. I need something more interesting than that.
A. Well, I think working in an office is quite interesting.
B. I've always wanted to be a hairdresser.
A. If you want to be a hairdresser, I think you'll have to go to college.
B. That's not possible at the moment because I need to earn some money. Let's see. Where's the job section in the newspaper?

Now, listen again.

Dialogue 6

A.  Hi mom, I'm home.
B.
Hello Robert, did you have a good day at college?
A. Yes, it was OK. I wanted to ask you something about my birthday next month. Could I have a party and invite some friends round for the evening?
B. Oh, Robert, what happened last time you had a party?
A. I know the neighbours said we were noisy but we'll be quieter this time, I promise.
B. It wasn't just the noise that was a problem. Some of the plants in the garden were damaged.
A. Oh, mum. A lot of people came to that party. That's why it was so noisy. If I only invite a few people this year, there shouldn't be any problems.
B. Well, I don't know. Who's going to make all the food?
A. I'll ask all my friends to bring something.
B. I'm not sure. I'll have to talk to your father about it.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 7

A. Are you going to the festival next week, Carol?
B. Yes. I'm so excited. Are you going, Louise?
A. Yes, I am. But I don't know what to wear. What are you going to wear?
B. I'm not sure, because the festival is outdoors. The weather's been
really bad recently.
A. Yes, I know it
rains nearly every day for two weeks.
B. I've just bought a lovely new dress. But if it rains, I'll get wet. I could take a jacket and an umbrella, I suppose.
A. I was going to wear jeans, but I'd rather wear something smarter. I think I'll decide near the time if it's sunny, I'll wear my dress. If it's raining, I'll wear jeans. Or perhaps my new trousers.
B. That's a good idea.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 8

A. Hi Sally. I didn't know you liked looking in book shops.
B. Yes, I do. Ian, this is my favourite bookshop. I come here every week.
A. Really. Do you read a lot then?
B. Yes, I read nearly every day. What about you?
A. Well, I probably read once or twice a week, so not as much as you.
B. What type of books do you read?
A. I like reading crime and detective novels. I love trying to guess who committed the crime.
B. Well, I like reading science fiction and historical books.
A. Do you? I'm surprised. I thought women were supposed to be more interested in romantic novels.
B.Oh, Ian, don't be silly.
A. Sorry. Just joking. I'm going to buy this book, then go for a coffee. Would you like to join me Sally?
B. Thanks. That would be really nice.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 9

A.  I'm going to buy a new car next month, Christine.
B. What are you going to buy, Alan?
A. I'm not sure yet. I've seen a fantastic black sports car, but it's too expensive for me.
B. Yes, you need to have a lot of money to buy one of those.
A. I'm looking for a big car, really, so I can go out with my friends and impress all the girls.
B. Oh, yes. Well, I quite like motorbikes, but they're too dangerous. So I think a small car suits me better.
A. Yes, but your car's really small. I want a big, fast car that looks good.
B. Well, small cars can be fast too. I'm sure you'll find something you like, Alan.
A.
Yes, I will. I'll take you for a drive when I've bought it.

 Now listen again.

Dialogue 10

A. Susan, can I borrow your computer, please?
B. I'm sorry, Alex. It's broken. I need to get it fixed, but I don't know where to take it.
A. I have a friend who could fix it for you if you like.
B. Where does he work?
A. He doesn't work. He's a student. He fixes computers in his spare time to earn some extra money.
B. I'm not sure. Is he good at fixing them? I don't want it to break down again.
A. Yes, he's studying computer engineering at college. It would be cheaper than taking it to a company to have it fixed.
B. That's true. How long would it take? I need it back quickly for my work.
A. I don't know. I'll phone him and ask.

Now listen again.
