Part 2
Listen to a talk about a young person's new school.

Woman:

I remember my first day at secondary school very well. I was eleven years old and was very nervous. My primary school had been very small, with only about 200 child. But my secondary school was much larger with over 1000 pupils on our first day, we were told which class to join and which room to go to. There were a lot of children in my class that I didn't know. However, there were a few from my primary school which helped me feel less nervous. We had to wear a uniform, which was a grey skirt and sweater with a red tie. It felt very strange wearing a school uniform as I had never worn one before. My new school was much bigger than my old one, and so it was easy to get lost. When I got my timetable, I was always late for classes during the first few weeks I didn't like being late because the teachers used to shout at. They didn't understand that it was difficult to find your way around at first. If I asked an older pupil where the classrooms were, they often used to laugh at me and wouldn't help. After I had been at school for about a month, I started to make new friends. I joined the hockey team and the Tennis Club and met lots of other pupils. My classmates were very nice and I became good friends with a girl called Sophia, who lived in the street close to me. Sometimes we used to meet each other on Saturdays and go shopping. I also had another good friend called Anita. We both like swimming and used to go to the pool together during the school holidays. My favourite subjects at school were sciences, art and history. I also liked mathematics, but I was better at science subjects. My favourite memory from my school days was winning a prize for my science project when I was 14 years old. I was given my prize in front of the whole school and I felt very proud. My parents were all so proud of me and took me to a nice restaurant afterwards to celebrate, and I was given a present by my grandparents for working so hard. At school I liked most of my teachers. My favourite was my art teacher because he was very kind and interesting. He showed us lots of paintings by famous artists, some of which I've seen in art galleries since I left school. When I looked back, I enjoyed my school days very much, even though it seemed very different and strange at first. You will now hear Part 2 again.
