Part 2
A woman is talking about Peru.

Woman:  Peru is the third largest country in South America, after Brazil and Argentina, making it one of the twenty biggest nations in the world. The population of Peru is over 27,000,000 inhabitants, only 27% of whom live in the countryside. It is a country of mixed origins as people moved there in the past from other parts of the world, including Africa and Europe. Spanish is the first language.

Quechua, an ancient Inca language, is also spoken in many areas, as are other languages. Peru is divided into three regions: the coast, the highlands and the jungle. The coastline is formed by a long desert which runs between the sea and the mountains. This region has low rainfall due to its position near the sea and the Andes Mountains. The Andes form the highland area. Temperatures can drop rapidly here, from around 24C at midday to -3C at night. The final area is the jungle, including the Amazon River, which is full of wildlife and vegetation.

Peru has many famous places to visit. One of these is Cuzco, an ancient city built by the Incas. Other famous places include Machu Picchu, an archaeological site, and Chan Chan, the desert city made from clay. These places are World Heritage Sites and receive money to help protect them from the damage and destruction caused by age, climate and tourism.

Peru has many customs and traditions, one of the most important being music. Archaeologists have found instruments dating back thousands of years. Due to its mixed heritage, Peru has over 1,300 types of music. Peruvians also love festivals and there are over 3,000 of these each year. Many of these are linked to religion and some include eating, drinking and even fighting. Dancing is also important at festivals and some regional dances have to be performed in certain kinds of dress. For example, the marinera dance requires the dancer to wear costumes with silk embroidery, while the “scissor” dancers decorate their costumes with small mirrors. Whenever and wherever you visit, you are sure to enjoy the many delights of this country.
