Part One. Dialogue 1.

A. What websites will help us with our essay, Nick?
B. We have to write about zoos here. This is a good site. Look, it's all about keeping animals in zoos.
A. To be honest, I don't think those are a good thing. Animals are often kept in small cages. That really is most cruel because they don't get any chance to exercise.
B. Yes, it doesn't seem right. It also it can't be very nice to have people watching you all the time, I know.
A. It must be awful to have. To live like that. I wonder how the animals feel.
B. It's difficult. Some people say that zoos are important because they protect rare animals like pandas or tigers.
A. That's true, but we still don't like them because the animals aren't living naturally. Safari parks aren't as bad animals. There can have more freedom to walk about outside.
B. Yes, I agree.
A. Anyway, is that website useful?

Now listen again.

Dialogue 2

A. Oh, you're here at last. Where have you been? I've been waiting for nearly 30 minutes.
B.
I'm not late. We arranged to meet at 2:30.
A.
Yes, we did originally, but then we changed the time to 2:00 o'clock.
B. I know, but then you changed it back to 2:30.
A. Didn't y
ou get my text message last night?
B. No, I received a message from Dave, but not from you.
A. But I d
id send you a message! I said I wanted to meet earlier. Just check your phone.
B. OK, look, here's the message from Dave. He wants to meet me at 6:30 tonight. But there isn't anything from you.
A. Well, I know I sent it. It must still be in space somewhere.
B. Next time you want to change an arrangement, phone me. It's much more reliable.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 3

A. I had a fantastic holiday, Mike. Sydney is a great place to visit
B. So I hear.
How long did you go for?
A.
I went for two weeks, which wasn't long enough, really. The hotel was great right next to the beach.
B. Very nice. Did you stay on the beach most of the time?
A.
No, there's so much to do in Sydney. We went to the beach most mornings, but in the afternoon it was too hot.
B. So what did you do then, Andy?
A.
Well in Sydney, the shopping centers are amazing. They have one of the largest in the world, but the best thing was their nightlife.
B. Did you go out a lot then?
A.
Every night. There are so many bars and clubs. It was great. You must go sometime.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 4

A. Good morning. IGM computers. Can I help you?
B. Hello I'd like to speak to Mr. Everett please.
A. Certainly hold the line, please. I'm sorry, Sir. He's not available at the moment.
B. Why not?
Is he in a meeting? Or maybe he's talking on another line. Could you find out? I must speak to him today.
A. No one seems to know where he is. I think he may have gone out. He is not answering the phone anyway. Would you like to leave a message and he will call you back?

B. What time will he be back? I really need to speak to him today. It's very important.
A. I really don't know, Sir. Why don't you leave a message and I'll ask him to call you as soon as he returns.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 5

A. Let's look at these sofas over here.
B. I'm tired of looking at sofas. We've been to every furniture shop in town.
A. I know, but it's important to buy the right one well.
B. You don't seem yo like any of them. They're either too big the wrong color, or the wrong shape.
A. OK, I know I'm fussy. Let's look at these ones. Then we'll go.
B. This green one is nice. It looks very comfortable.
A. But the color is too light. It will get dirty very quickly.
B. Well, I like the green one. It's very stylish.
A. Yes, but it won't match the color of our room. Green and mauve. I don't think so. And it's the wrong size. I want something larger.
B. See? I knew y
ou wouldn't like any of them. I'm going for a coffee.
A. All right, I'm coming.

Now, listen again.

B. I don't want to do France. We already know a lot about France in our French classes.
A. Yeah, I agree. Let's choose a country with a completely different culture to ours.
B. OK, I've always thought India was an interesting country.  It seems a very colorful culture.
A. Yes, but I don't like the food.
B. Well, We don't have to eat any Indian food. Which countries are you interested?
A. I think China has a different way of life to us, don't you? And I do like Chinese food or maybe an African country like Morocco.
B. Well, Africa is an amazing place, but we might go to China for a holiday next year, so that would interest me.
A. Fine. Let's choose that one then.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 7

A. Hi, Dora. I heard you got really good exam results.
B. Yes, I did. I worked really hard to get them though. What about you?
A. My results were all right. I did quite well in
Geography, I got 55%. I didn't do very well in English and maths however.
B. English and maths they were my two best subjects.

A. Really I've never been any good at maths. What grades did you get?
B. Well, for maths I got 85% and for English I got 76%. I couldn't believe it when I opened the letter and saw the results.

A. That's great. Well done. Perhaps you could give me some lessons next time. I'll pay you to teach me.
B. OK, I always need extra money.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 8

A. So what are you going to get for your birthday, Alice?
B. Well, Maria, my parents want me to tell them what I would like soon.
A. Tell me what you've decided.
B. I can't make up my mind. I've wanted horse riding lessons for a long time.
A. Yes, I know. You're always talking about it Alice.
B. But I'd like to be an actress when I leave school, so an acting course would be a good choice.
A. Which would be more useful?
B. Perhaps the acting lessons, however, I've seen a lovely gold necklace and earrings, but they're really expensive Maria.
A. Well, you would have the jewelry for a long time, wouldn't you? And you could wear it to the wedding next month.
B. Yes, I could. But I keep thinking about my future career in acting.

A. So Alice What present are you going to choose?
B. The course, I think.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 9
A. I'm so excited about the party Sue.
B. Me too. Have you made a list of who you want to invite?
A. Yes, I have. I hope it's
similar to your list.
B. Let's see Li
dia. We said we would only invite 50 people, didn't we? We seem to have decided on the same people. Oh no, I don't want to invite Dan. I don't like him at all, but I'm glad to see you've invited Nick and his girlfriend Barbara.
A.  Yeah, they're a lovely couple, but I think Dan is
really nice. I want him to come. You've invited Angela. I really don't like her. She always causes trouble.
B. No, she doesn't. How can you say that Lidia?
A. Well, I won't invite Dan if you won't invite Angela.
B. All right, we won't ask those two then. Are you happy now?
A. Yes, I suppose so.

Now listen again.

Dialogue 10

A. So have you any ideas about where you would like to go for a weekend break?
B. I've heard Barcelona in Spain is a great place.
In fact, there is so much to do. It's called the city that never sleeps.
A.
I'm not sure I want anything so hectic. I've always wanted to go to Venice. Would you like to go there?
B. It sounds nice. But don't you have to go everywhere on a boat?
A. Would that be a problem? If it is, we could try somewhere like Paris or Rome or somewhere really different. What about New York or Dubai?

B. I think it will be cheaper to stay in Europe, don't you? We don't have that much money to spend.
A. OK.
So which of those cities do you prefer?
B. Paris then, if Barcelona is too busy for you.
