Unit 5

Unit one listening activity one. You will hear a. Boy, talking to a friend on the phone. He is describing a girl called Suzanne. Which of the three pictures? A, B or C below. Show Suzanne. Take the correct box.

Speaker 1

Yes, Mike, I know I promise to bring you my CD's, but I just can't make it. Look, I've arranged with my sister Suzanne to meet you at the train station and give them to you. Yes, at the main entrance. I know it's always crowded, but. Listen, let me describe her to you so that you'll recognise her. Well, she's tall. UMA, little taller than me and she always wears high heeled shoes, which makes her even taller. Yes, she told me that she'll be wearing a skirt and a blouse. A yellow blouse, I think. No, no, a white one with yellow flowers. Now she'll be wearing a skirt. No, not a long one. Are you kidding? Short and blue, you see, blue and yellow are her favorite color. No, not a blue and yellow skirt, just blue. You can't miss her. Oh, yes, her hair. Uh, it was brown up until last week, but she's dyed it blonde. Yes, it's long and curly. Down to her shoulders. No a bit longer. Look, don't worry. Sure, you'll recognise her. How about telling me what you'll be wearing so that Suzanne can recognize you?

Unit 2

Unit 2 listening. Activity one. You will hear three teenagers introducing themselves and talking about their interests, hobbies. match the names of the teenagers below with the activity they are interested in. There are two extra pictures which you do not need to use. Speaker one.

Speaker 1

Hi, my name is Danny. I'm 14 years old and I'm from Canada. I live with my parents and my twin sisters in Toronto. We came here from Montreal a few months ago because my father got a transfer. There are thousands of things to do here, but I spend most of my free time trying to improve my goalkeeping skills on ice. You see, I've joined the school ice hockey team and I train with my new friends every afternoon. Last Sunday, we played our first game. We didn't win, but it was great stopped the other team from scoring at least three times.

Speaker 2.

My name is Elizabeth, but my friends call me Lizzie. I'm from England, but I live in Japan with my parents and my brother. We've been here for less than a year now. Actually, it's ten months. My brother and I go to high school and we have a lot of friends. English, Japanese, and Chinese. My brother loves playing computer games and I enjoy decorating my room with my own works of art. My best friend Yoko introduced me to a Japanese art called origami. This is when you make different things such as little animals or flowers from a piece of paper by folding it in different ways. I really love it.

Speaker 3.

Hi, I'm Lars and I'm from Norway. I live with my parents, my grandparents and my sister Ingrid. I'm 17 years old and she's 23 years older than me. We live in a small village outside Oslo. It's a beautiful place. The mountains and the forests are just magnificent. It's an ideal place for those who like painting like my sister. Ingrid is a really talented painter. I wish I could be like her, but I'm hopeless. In my free time, I prefer outdoor activities like skating on the ice. I learned when I was really young and I remember that at first I kept falling down. I've got the hang of it now and I enjoy myself very much.

Unit 3

Unit 3 listening. Activity one. You will hear a man and a woman talking about three different islands. Tick the one they decide to go to.

Speaker 1:

The travel agent has given me some information about the island. Let’s see if we can choose one we both like.

Speaker 2

So what are our options?

Speaker 1

Well, our first option is Silver Island.

Speaker 2

Does it have nice beaches?

Speaker 1

From what he said, all the beaches are clean and have good facilities, but not all of them have sand. Some are sandy and some have pebbles.

Speaker 2

As long as we can go swimming.

Speaker 1

Yes, I agree. No, something else. There aren't any archaeological sites to visit there.

Speaker 2

No?

Speaker 1

But we can tour the island, he says. It's beautiful and we can get around easily by bus.

Speaker 2

I just hope there aren't a lot of tourists.

Speaker 1

I'm afraid we won't be able to avoid that. The island is packed throughout the summer, so I don't think...

Speaker 2

And where would we stay?

Speaker 1

There are some luxurious hotel resorts you know, swimming pools, tennis courts.

Speaker 2

Well, that's not too bad, but what are the other islands like?

Speaker 1

Seagull Island is quite different. Very few tourists go there, so it's quite peaceful. There are daily bus tours of the island which include a visit to a medieval castle. Oh, and there are boat trips around the. Island as well.

Speaker 2

Really?

Speaker 1

You see the island is rocky There are no beaches, no sand to lie on and soak up the sun just rocks. But people hire boats which take you around. They can even stop for you to have a swim in deep waters.

Speaker 2

Sounds interesting. What about hotels?

Speaker 1

There aren't any. The locals rent out rooms and traditional houses. That gives you the chance to live simply and get to know the people.

Speaker 2

I see. What about our third option?

Speaker 1

It’s Coral island. It is a small isolated island. Everything is within walking distance, no cars or anything. So it's very peaceful there. And there are a few places of historical interest to visit. I think a museum with ...

Speaker 2

There wouldn't be a hotel there, would there?

Speaker 1

Actually there are two, although hardly anyone visits this island, the travel agent told me that one of the hotels is near a wonderful beach. By the way, from the pictures I saw, the beaches must be fantastic. You know, they're like the ones on tropical islands, endless sand and palm trees. I think Coral Island is a good idea. We'll get away from the city for a while. What do you think?

Speaker 2

Well, I want something peaceful too, but different. Why don't we skip the hotels and nice beaches for a change? It could be fun swimming in deep waters.

Speaker 1

Sure, why not? So Silver and Coral islands are out of the question. Let's get ready for...

Unit 4

Unit 4 listening activity one. Look at the pictures below and listen to a conversation between two friends. Which of the following A to E did the man visit or do during his holiday? Put a tick in the appropriate boxes.

Speaker 1

Oh it was great. Believe me, you must go.

Speaker 2

So what made you choose Austria? I thought you wanted to visit Germany.

Speaker 1

Yes, I did. But Mary didn't like the idea. She preferred Holland, but I'd already been there and I didn't want to go again. Anyway, we were at the travel agents and they had this very good deal with Austria, so we decided to go there. Just me and Mary. We left the kids with their grandmother.

Speaker 2

Oh that's good. So tell me, what did you do?

Speaker 1

Well, we first went to Vienna which is the capital. There are many things to see and do there. We visited the Schönborn Palace. It was really beautiful. There were gardens with different kinds of flowers and trees behind the palace and even a pond.

Speaker 2

That sounds like a fairy tale. What else did you do?

Speaker 1

Well, we did a lot of walking and touring, took loads of pictures, visited museums. Oh, we also went on a carriage ride. Lots of tourists do it. It was fun.

Speaker 2

Wow. I've never been on a carriage drawn by horses.

Speaker 1

However, we didn't get the chance to go to a cultural event, which is a pity. Do you know how many festivals take place in Vienna? There are festivals for everything, operas, orchestral performances, ballet performances.

Speaker 2

That's too bad. Did you go anywhere else in Austria?

Speaker 1

Well, we really wanted to go to Salzburg, which is the birth place of Mozart, the famous composer. They say that there are beautiful mountains all around the city, but we had to choose between Salzburg and Hofgarten. So we decided on Hofgarten as we really wanted to go skiing. It was a lot of fun. We went up the mountain on the lift and we admired some magnificent views. Unfortunately, we were only able to enjoy our favorite sport for two out of the five days we were there.

Speaker 2

Why? What about the other three days?

Speaker 1

We were told that it was dangerous. You see the ‘Fern’ a warm, dry wind from the South was blowing. This melts the snow and often causes avalanches.

Speaker 2

Really, I didn't know that.

Speaker 1

Neither did we.

Speaker 2

So what did you do during the rest of your stay? Did you...

Unit 5

Unit 5. Listening activity one. Look at the picture below and listen to the woman's description. There are three mistakes in the picture. Find them and circle them.

Speaker 1

OK, OK, calm down. There's no need to panic. Now just tell me what happened once again. Slowly this time. I'll write it down in the report.

Speaker 2

When you say I was on Camp Rd. you know?

Speaker 1

Yes, I know where it is. Go on.

Speaker 2

Right. I was walking down Kent Rd. alone. On my way to a friend's house, suddenly I saw a bright light in the sky.

Speaker 1

Was it possibly a street light? You know, sometimes the light plays tricks with our eyes and...

Speaker 2

Young man. There's nothing wrong with my eyes. I'm 50 years old and I still don't wear glasses.

Speaker 1

Please calm down. I didn't mean it that way.

Speaker 2

Besides, it happened this afternoon in broad daylight, so the street lights were not on.

Speaker 1

What exactly happened?

Speaker 1

I saw a spaceship. It was red and yellow and it was coming closer and closer. Suddenly it stopped a few metres above the ground. There were three figures inside, like people. But with big eyes.

Speaker 1

Three people with big eyes.

Speaker 2

No, no. They weren’t people. They were like people with big eyes and they were green but had no hair.

Speaker 1

Are you telling me that you saw green aliens?

Speaker 2

Well, I don't know what you would call them. But I definitely saw them.

Speaker 1

Are you sure?

Speaker 2

Young men. Are you saying that I'm crazy?

Speaker 1

No Madam, I'm just trying to understand.

Speaker 2

Anyway, a few seconds later I began to feel weak. Then I fell to the ground.

Speaker 1

You fainted.

Speaker 2

I didn't say that. I said I fell to the ground. When I woke up, I was a mile down the road near my friend's house. I was lying on the grass and it was about an hour after midnight. How I got there is something I can't explain. Maybe these creatures kidnapped me.

Speaker 1

Are you saying that these bald green aliens kidnapped you and then left you a mile down the road on the grass?

Speaker 2

Exactly.

Speaker 1

Look, Madam, find this story hard to believe. Especially when no one else has seen the spaceship or the aliens. But this is what I'll do. I'll send a police car there to search the area, and I'll let you know if anything comes up, OK?

Speaker 2

I think you should tell all the people in the area to be careful. Because these creatures might come back and kidnap them.
